Why Thomas Friedman Abetted Anti-Semitism

After a lifetime of studying the left, I have concluded that leftism is a form of moral poison. It causes otherwise decent and kind people who take it into their systems to say and/or do cruel and sometimes evil things.

While not specifically about the left, a major new scholarly book, "Pathological Altruism" (Oxford University Press), explores this phenomenon of people wanting to do good things yet ending up doing bad. It applies to The New York Times foreign affairs columnist Thomas L. Friedman, who has a deep altruistic urge to bring peace to the Middle East. But because he sees the world through the liberal/left prism, he says morally reprehensible things -- statements that individuals associated with hate-filled, non-altruistic groups and ideologies would make.

In his Dec. 13 column, yet another of his attacks on Israel and its supporters, Friedman wrote: "The standing ovation (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) got in Congress this year was ... bought and paid for by the Israel lobby."

If a non-Jew had written this, he would have been severely condemned for writing something outright anti-Semitic. The notion that Jews manipulate the levers of power in Western societies for their own nefarious ends is probably the most enduring of all the West's Jew-hating myths. It was a staple of Nazi anti-Semitism and is the single most repeated charge of those in the Arab and larger Muslim worlds who seek to annihilate Israel, since its purpose is to convince people that non-Jews who support Israel have been paid off by Jews.

But Friedman, who is a Jew and a liberal, can get away with it -- even though it is so morally repulsive that Jew-haters can now assert they are merely quoting a well-known Jew. Who's going to call him on it? The New York Times?

To his credit, one congressman did condemn Friedman. Rep. Steven R. Rothman (D-N.J.) released this statement: "Thomas Friedman's defamation against the vast majority of Americans who support the Jewish State of Israel, in his New York Times opinion piece today, is scurrilous, destructive and harmful to Israel and her advocates in the U.S. Mr. Friedman is not only wrong, but he's aiding and abetting a dangerous narrative about the U.S.-Israel relationship and its American supporters.

"I gave Prime Minister Netanyahu a standing ovation, not because of any nefarious lobby, but because it is in America's vital national security interests to support the Jewish State of Israel, and it is right for Congress to give a warm welcome to the leader of such a dear and essential ally. Mr. Friedman owes us all an apology."

Friedman's charge, as Rothman points out, is not only "scurrilous, destructive and harmful" to Israel, but it is also a lie. The Congress of the United States -- including Republicans who have virtually no Jews in their district or state -- supports Israel for the same reasonsHarry Truman recognized Israel against the advice of the U.S. State Department, Richard Nixon saved Israel during the 1973 War despite his anger at Jewish liberals, and Dick Cheney vigorously supported Israel despite Wyoming's having almost no Jewish population. They all believed that Israel shares America's moral values, while Israel's enemies (who happen to hate America as well as Israel) do not.

So how does Mr. Friedman, whom I assume is an honorable man and well-intentioned seeker of peace in the Middle East, write something that is equally mendacious and hateful, that abets anti-Semitism and that labels every pro-Israel congressman and senator a political whore?

Because he is a man of the left.

When good people adopt the leftist worldview, they eventually support ideas and say things that are cruel. Thomas Friedman did not write this anti-Semitic libel because he is an anti-Semite. Of course he is not an anti-Semite. He wrote it because he is a leftist.

Leftism poisons everything it influences -- from journalism to the arts to universities to religion to government to male-female relations. And ultimately leftism poisons character. This does not mean that everyone with left-wing views becomes a bad person, and it doesn't mean that everyone with conservative views is a good person. Both judgments are untrue and foolish.

But it does mean that leftism leads to pathologic altruism, i.e., bad things done by people with pure intentions. Just as Mahatma Gandhi's hatred of violence led him to tell the Jews of Europe not to resist Hitler, so too has leftism led decent people who would weep at Israel's destruction to mouth the very same lies about Israel as those who seek its annihilation.

When it comes to Israel, why is the world silent?

Silence. Just silence from the U.N. Silence from Palestinian PresidentMahmoud Abbas. And silence from major media outlets throughout the world.
Imagine for just a moment if this were happening to cities in, say, Texas.Imagine that the citizens of El Paso, Laredo and San Antonio have to stayinside their homes. Schools are closed, businesses are shut and people have tosuspend their lives. Not because of some natural disaster or a nuclear or chemicalaccident, because groups in Mexico have purchased and are firing thousands ofdeadly missiles at Texans across the border. Sometimes a school is hit,sometimes a grocery store, and every so often someone is killed.
Imagine a similar occurrence in Seattle, Detroit or Cleveland — with rocketsraining in from Canada.
Your reaction to this imagined scenario is, no doubt, incredulity. The verythought of terrorists in another country attacking Americans at random isludicrous. You know the president would immediately order the U.S. military torespond, root out the terrorists and make sure that the Canadian or Mexicangovernments clearly understood that this behavior would not be tolerated. TheUnited Nations Security Council would immediately condemn this infringement ona country's sovereignty and the safety of its citizens. The U.N. charter makesa country's self-defense as legal as it is logical. This is universallyunderstood.
So if it is natural to be outraged and support the defense againstterrorists who attack Texas, or England or Russia or China, why is it notnatural to support the same for Israel? Since the beginning of October,more than 70 rockets and missiles have rained down on southern Israel from theGaza Strip, which remains under the control of the Hamas terroristorganization. Last week, Israel's densely populated northern towns were hit byrockets fired from Lebanon.
Hamas deliberately fires rockets into the heart of Israel's major cities,which have exploded on playgrounds, near kindergarten classrooms and homes.Last month, a man was killed when a rocket struck his car on his eveningcommute home. Many more people have been injured. In the last month alone, morethan a million Israelis had to stay home from work and more than 200,000 studentswere unable to attend school. You don't read about this because if it's coveredat all, it's buried in the back pages of newspapers.
Although these horrific attacks should appall good people everywhere, notone word of condemnation has come from the Security Council in the UnitedNations. Peace activists that regularly criticize my country are silent on thisone as well.
Underlying the violence that continues to emanate from Gaza is a deeplyrooted culture of incitement. Last month, would-be Palestinian suicide bomberWafa al-Biss was released from prison as part of an exchange for kidnappedIsraeli soldier Gilad Schalit. Al-Biss offered a breathtaking challenge tocheering schoolchildren at her Hamas welcome-home rally. She said, "I hopeyou will walk the same path that we took and God willing, we will see some ofyou as martyrs." Her crime? She tried to kill doctors, nurses and patientsby blowing herself up in an Israeli hospital. Luckily, she failed to detonate.
These are the poisonous values that are being fed to the next generation ofchildren in Gaza. When Israel looks at children, it sees the future. WhenHamas looks at children, it sees suicide bombers and human shields. If onlyincitement were confined to Gaza. It also pervades the official institutions ofthe Palestinian Authority in the West Bank — and many other corners of ourregion. In schools, mosques and media, generation after generation ofchildren across the Middle East have been taught to hate, vilify and dehumanizeIsraelis and Jews.
The intolerance all too common in the Middle East finds its way around theworld, even entering the halls of the U.N. Today the U.N. is home to atriple standard: one standard for democracies, a different standard fordictatorships and a special, unobtainable standard for Israel. So I posethis ethical question, not from a philosophy course at a great university butbased very much in the real world: If it is not OK to fire deadly rockets atthe citizens of any of the other 193 member states that make up the UnitedNations, why is the world silent when the victims are Israelis?

Chazzal teach us that Chizkiyahu Melech Yehudah was amongst the greatest leaders of our people. He enacted laws that would cultivate Gedolim and Talmidei Chachomim in all of Klal Yisroel and our people flourished under his reign. Yet, Chizkiyahu saw with prophecy that he was destined to have a child who would be as wicked as he was righteous. He was thus afraid to produce a child. However, he was advised not to engage in influencing and tampering with the destiny and master plan of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. It was not his 'cheshbon' to influence the heavenly ordinances.

He understood the message and bore this child whom he named Menashe. Sure enough, Menashe grew up to be one of the most wicked people in our history. Where his Father had promoted spirituality, Menashe stifled it. Under his reign, our leaders were killed and their "blood flowed through the streets". Torah learning was forbidden and idolatry carried the day. Chazzal tell that Menashe was ultimately captured by opposing forces and thrown into a cauldron of burning water. As he lay trapped in the water with his flesh burning off his body, the Gemorah says that he began to call out to all of his idols by name, imploring them to save him from his predicament! He begged this idol, the other idol etc. Of course, none of these idols whom he had worshipped his entire life, came to help him in his time of need! Finally, the Gemorah relates that when Menashe was at the end of his rope, so to speak, he called out to Hakadosh Baruch Hu with the following proposal:

He said "Hashem, please help save me from my predicament - for if you do not, then "kol anpin shavim" - You are all the same! Meaning; - Menashe was telling the Ribbono Shel Olam - "look, I called out to all of my Idols and they could not help me. Now I am calling out to you. If you cannot help me either, then you are just like them; you are all the same!

The Gemorah relates that the Angels quickly intervened and closed the Sharei Shamayim (Gates of Heaven) so that the pleas of this Rasha would not reach the Kisei Hakavod! What happened next is a complete mystery. Hakadosh Baruch Hu "drilled a small hole" in his heavens to allow the voice of the dying Menashe to come up to his throne and he proceeded to save Menashe's life in a most miraculous way (as the Gemorah tells).

This story is a complete mystery!

For one thing, why did Hashem decide to save the life of this Rasha - who had spent his entire life rejecting Hakadosh Baruch Hu while attempting to wipe out all vestiges of spirituality from our people? Moreover, when Menashe finally did reach out to Hashem, look at the seeming Chutzpah- hubris with which he approached this! He actually makes conditions with Hashem! He equates Hashem with his worthless idols and says that If Hashem doesn't help him, then he is the same as the rest of those idols!! The sheer chutzpa of this statement! Of course the idols were not in a position to save him! They cannot! However, if Hashem were not to save him, it would be completely justified...after all, he didn't deserve it!
There are really two puzzling questions here
1. Why did Hashem save him?
2. What was the meaning behind Menashes cryptic and seemingly brazen plea to Hashem?
The answer to these questions is incredibly beautiful and a lesson for all of us.
Menashes' plea to Hashem was beautiful and profound in its depth. He was actually telling Hakadosh Baruch Hu the following:

"Look, I know what a Rasha I have been all of my life and that I am completely unworthy of your salvation. However, my Father (Chizkiyahu) always taught me as a child, that our Father in heaven displays kindness without boundaries or limitations. I was taught that your mercy for your children is without borders and not impeded by and contained within the framework of any yardstick or measure. Therefore, if you do not save me now in my time of need and despair, this would be an indication that I have simply strayed too far and that I am beyond salvation. This would mean that it is actually possible for a human being on this Earth to sin so badly, that he would actually place himself beyond the scope of your mercy. This means by extention, that your mercy is finite; that it is limited by the constraints of finite boundaries. If this is the case, then you are not the Hashem I was taught about in my youth!!

Upon hearing his pleas, the Malachei Hashareis moved quickly to block his prayers from advancing to the Kisei Hakavod. However, Hashem destined otherwise. Hashem created an opening for Menashes' tefilos to reach his heavenly throne and he actually granted him his request and saved his life!

Why?

Hashem wanted to make an example of Menashe and to teach all future generations that it is never "too late" to do Teshuva and to repent. Indeed, there is no such thing as a Jew straying too far from the fold...there is no such thing as Hashems' patience and mercy being overridden by the sins of a Jew.

No Jew is ever beyond salvation, because G-Ds' mercy and patience is without boundaries or limitations!

Indeed, the lesson we take from Menashe ben Chizkiyahu Melech Yehudah, is both profound and timely. It is never too late for a Jew to do Teshuva and come closer to Borei Olam!

News From Egypt, DAMN Those Jews are GOOD!

There is an old story about a Jewish man who goes to his rabbi to let him know he is converting to Christianity and joining a Neo-Nazi party. Shocked the rabbi says, "But Bernie, you are such an observant Jew, you keep kosher, go to Synagogue and pray 3x every day, you are our number one Torah reader. what would make you do something like convert and become a Nazi?"

"Well Rabbi," says Bernie, "I come to Synagogue and and hear talk to the other Jews, all I hear is bad stuff, the Arabs hate us, the Europeans hate Jews, the President hates us. I hear the same thing, over and over and over.

"But the Nazi party?" Says the Rabbi?

"You Bet," says Bernie, "I went to one meeting and there was nothing bad, all they kept saying was the Jews own the Banks, the Jews run the government, the Jews own the media and Hollywood. It made me so proud.

I know how Bernie feels especially when reading about Antisemitism in Egypt. They are so creative. Sure they pass along the hateful propaganda that Jew own the media, Hollywood, banks and control the US government, but they also come up with such unusual ways to slander the Jewish people.

Remember what happened last December when Egyptian swimmers were attacked by sharks. An Egyptian official claimed that a shark that killed one person and left four others injured in Egypt could have been placed there by agents from Mossad, the Israeli spy agency.

It wasn't some low level official either,

Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shousha, the regional governor, claimed it was not "out of the question" that Israel could have planned the attacks on tourists to dent the Egyptian economy.

After reading that story, all I could think was "Damn We're good, even though I knew the story was nonsense.

The latest news from Egypt contains another one of those "Damn We're Good" moments, combined with a little bit of nonsense from Adam Sandler's movie, You Don't Mess with the Zohan.

Israeli citizen Ofir Harrari, recently accused by Egypt of spying for Israel, was allegedly involved in a complicated scheme intended to harm Egyptian reproduction abilities, Egypt's official state paper Al-Ahram has claimed.

Harrari, accused by Egypt of being an agent of the Mossad, is set be tried in absentia on charges of "spying for a foreign country with the purpose of harming Egyptian national interest," news agency MENA reported on Sunday.

"According to the public prosecutor's office's investigation, 'Mossad agent Ofir Harrari' instructed Jordanian Ibrahim abu-Zaid to set up a company in Egypt which would exclusively import an Israeli hair product, for both men and women, which causes infertility. This in order to completely destroy Egyptian reproduction abilities," Al-Ahram states.

Gee whiz, the Mossad messing with Egyptian hair products as to make Egyptians sterile.

Isn't it great how one of only two nation's that has made peace with the Jewish State has such great respect for the Jewish people that they make up stories just to show our brilliance? Damn, Those J ews are good!

Historian Arnold Toynbee, who developed the theory of challenge-and-response to account for the survivability of civilizations, has said that great civilizations are not murdered, they commit suicide — by not meeting their challenges. A variation of this historical insight may be phrased thus: When a civilization or an empire feels inwardly that it is dying, or as Oswald Spengler put it in The Decline of the West, that it wants to die and “wishes itself into the darkness,” it begins to go mad. Collective madness is a sure portent that an end is approaching, that an axial transformation is about to occur, that an entire worldview or cultural habitus is on the verge of disintegration. It signals that a people has surrendered to a mortal destiny, repudiated its sustaining tradition and condign principles, and indeed has gone so far as to regard the enemy at the gates as a form of salvation. “They were, those people, a kind of solution,” say Constantine Cavafy’s effete Romans in his celebrated poem, “Waiting for the Barbarians.”
“Western politics,” Raymond Ibrahim has said, discussing the befuddled American and European outreach to the Muslim Brotherhood with its clever, phased project for infiltrating Western society, “have descended into idealism and fantasy.” The same can be said about the state of the Western media. The media are like the neural pathways establishing connections between the various parts of the “world brain.” When they begin to transmit false representations and misleading messages, the response to world events is at best incongruous and at worst drastically contorted. Both public sentiment and public policy lurch about in a kind of no-man’s land, unable to make contact with things as they are. Obviously, there will always be a certain amount of “misfiring” in the circuitry, but when the entire system is warped and deformed, it becomes next to impossible to properly “read” the empirical world and react in appropriate ways. This creates a disjunction between mind and reality, which is one definition of madness.
The gradual but unrelenting insinuation of socialist and neo-Marxist doctrine into the liberal West, after it has been reliably shown to falter or collapse wherever it has been implemented, is still another index of severe mental disconnect and maladjustment to reality. Command economies are proven to be inefficient, and the welfare state, predicated on the punitive taxation of a shrinking and increasingly insolvent productive base to subsidize ever-inflating entitlement programs, has been properly described as a gigantic Ponzi scheme. Redistributionist and womb-to-tomb security states, as Margaret Thatcher famously said, will eventually run out of other people’s money. Nevertheless, this ideological will-o’-the-wisp continues to be diligently pursued.
Or consider the phenomenon of multiculturalism, as interpreted and practiced in the West, which has led the countries that have adopted it into a state of social and political bedlam. Based, as Salim Mansur argues in his new book Delectable Lie, “on the false idea — another official lie, really — that all cultures are equal,” it is progressively destroying “the West’s liberal democratic heritage…by extending recognition to groups defined through collective identity” and by elevating ethnicity over nationality. As a consequence, under the glazed and permissive view of the political class, the social fabric has critically unraveled, no-go enclaves have sprung up in many cities, the specter of homegrown terrorism haunts the public square, the structure of Western law and normative conduct has come under threat, and growing tension is the order of the day. Multiculturalism has seen the heritage culture adapting to the demands, institutions, and usages of immigrant societies rather than the other way round.
Indeed, the European Union has promulgated laws which militate against the criticism of Islam on the grounds of hate speech. Politicians, journalists, and ordinary citizens, like Geert Wilders, Lars Hedegaard, and Elisabeth Sabbaditch-Wolff, respectively, have found themselves prosecuted in court for warning their fellow citizens against the infiltration of radical Islam into the body politic. The same travesty is being repeated in Canada, whose misnamed Human Rights Commissions, which are essentially kangaroo courts that are not required to follow the rules of evidence, have tried such forthright and respectable journalists as Ezra Levant and Mark Steyn for offending Muslim sensibilities. If this is not madness, I don’t know what is.
Perhaps the most conspicuous current example of collective delirium was the election of Barack Hussein Obama to the presidency of the United States. A man with no record of significant prior achievement, who sat for twenty years in the pews of a dubious church under the ministry of an anti-American and anti-Jewish, hate-spewing pastor, who has associated with various compromised individuals such as former PLO spokesman Rashid Khalidi, antisemite and black supremacist Louis Farrakhan, unrepentant former terrorist Bill Ayers, pro-Islamist plutocrat Khalid al-Mansour, and corrupt businessman Tony Rezko, whose political sentiments lie far to the Left, whose dossier remains in large measure under seal and whose verifiable biography is to a disturbing degree a matter of conjecture — all this and much more should have alerted the electorate to his gross unsuitability for office, prompted the legacy media to investigate, and disqualified him immediately from running for the Democratic nomination.
But the emotional frenzy surrounding his candidacy ensured that sanity would not prevail in outing a man whom Robert Kimball has called “a typical hothouse product of our self-satisfied liberal elite.” Kimball continues, with much justification, that “tens or hundreds of thousands of people will suffer because of our naïveté and Barack Obama’s malevolent stupidity.” The sequel has made it amply clear to all but the partisan, the myopic, and the myriad barnacles clinging to the ship of state and dependent on the largesse of the Democratic Party that America has been gravely weakened both domestically and abroad, and that it might not recover. And yet it is entirely conceivable that Obama may be re-elected to the most powerful office in the world. We recall it was not only a besotted American electorate that hoisted him on its collective shoulders; all Europe also went berserk over the man. Even the Israelis treated him like royalty when he gave his lying Sderot speech. If this is not madness, I don’t know what is.
These are only a few examples, which could be multiplied indefinitely, of a civilization losing control of its future. The riots we are currently witnessing in the UK, ignited to a great extent by an entitlement culture that cannot meet the expectations it has created, is only a modest symptom of what is coming down the pike. The overall spectacle we are observing today — the dramatic erosion of a sense of civic responsibility, the nihilistic relativizing of moral principle, the insidious effects of political correctness, the reluctance to deal adequately with terrorism, the mounting hostility toward Jews and Israel, the return of autocratic rule in Europe with the appointment of authoritarian bureaucrats answerable to no one to the European Parliament, the cosseting of Islam, the election of incompetents, as in the U.S., as well as in Britain, Sweden, France, Spain, Australia, and many other places — the list goes on and on — are infallible harbingers of cultural and civilizational decay. Good things come to an end, just like everything else. It seems highly probable that the United States in particular and Western civilization in general have begun to circle the drain. The symptoms of an imperium in its dotage are unmistakable.
The greatest civilization the world has ever known has lost confidence in itself, infected by a plague of self-doubt and self-recrimination. Having lost its bearings, it is no longer willing or able to think clearly, to make difficult choices, to defend its patrimony and resist demographic subversion, to accept the need for sacrifice, to value the radiant catalogue of its triumphs and achievements in art, science, technology, medicine, and statecraft, and, with its declining birthrate, even to reproduce itself. This is total madness. Further, the leftist “illiberal trajectory” it has embarked upon, as Caroline Glick writes, has led to the “bid to criminalize ideological opponents and justify acts of terrorism,” a radical political shift that “will destroy the liberal democratic foundations of Western civilization.”
Is a return to psychic health at all possible? Do civilizations convalesce? Can those who follow the maxim of the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius in his Meditations — “the object of life is…to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane” — influence events for the better or at least defer the inevitable? Is the writing on the wall erasable graffiti or is it, shall we say, Biblically indelible?
Any way we look at it, the prognosis is not encouraging. As Martin Heidegger deposed in a 1966 Der Spiegel interview, the only one of the philosopher’s utterances that keeps on echoing, “Only a god can save us now.”

Every single Palestinian Authority terrorist held in an Israeli jail receives a monthly salary from the PA. Terrorists who committed the most heinous crimes – and therefore received longer sentences – receive the most money, according to a report in Israeli paper Yisrael Hayom.

Citing a report received by a senior government official in Jerusalem, the paper says that the terrorists' salaries are paid from the PA's "public budget," which accounts for about 3.5 percent of its total budget.

The PA treasury receives cash from two main sources: the US pays about 50 percent of the money, and the rest is mostly from European Union member nations.

Prisoners who were jailed for periods of up to five years receive 1,400 to 2,000 NIS per month. However, terrorists serving 10 to 15 years receive 6,000 shekels, the ones serving 15 to 20 years receive 10,000 shekels, and those serving 20 to 30 years get 12,000 shekels. These are people who planned, directed and took part in the intentional sadistic slaughter of civilian men, women and children, at point blank range.

Since some of the victims of PA terror are American citizens, the information means that US taxpayers pay monthly salaries to the people who murdered their fellow citizens. The latest US citizen who was a victim of PA terror is Ben Yosef Livnat, who was gunned down in Shechem.

The terrorists' wives and children receive additional cash, and prisoners with Israel citizenship get a bonus.

A world without Israel?

Why do we “afflict” ourselves for 25 hours when we have returned to the Jewish state and built a wonderful country from the ground up?

Each year in recent times, as the ninth of Av approaches, we ask the question: How can we sit and mourn for Jerusalem, when the city has been so magnificently rebuilt? Why do we “afflict” ourselves for 25 hours when we have returned to the Jewish state in amazing numbers, and built a wonderful country from the ground up, with a superb army, world-class universities and a brilliant economy? Has Tisha Be’av become passé? These thoughts were reinforced last week when my wife and I took a Segway tour on the newly-refurbished Armon HaNatziv promenade. Led by our expert guide Chaim, we beheld a magnificent view of Jerusalem rebuilt, with its many sparkling new neighborhoods against the ancient villages and walls of the Old City. From that elevated view, one can truly appreciate how unique our Jewish capital is, and how it so brilliantly melds the past and the future.

Yet despite all this, I will still recite lamentations on Tisha Be’av; I will still add the somber Nachem plea for consolation to my prayers. Not only in remembrance for the spiritually-elevated world, centered around the Temple, which vanished when Jerusalem was destroyed (twice); but also for the shuddering thought of a third destruction, God forbid. For only when we force ourselves to consider what the effect would be of another Holocaust – this time on Israeli soil – can we begin to relate to the destruction that was visited here.

And so, with apologies to the History Channel’s “Life After People” series, I ask you to gather up your courage and consider A World Without Israel.

THIS SCENARIO – may it never come to pass - occurs sometime in the future.

The combined forces of Syria, Hezbo- Lebanon, a radicalized Egypt and an only semi-reluctant Jordan – spurred on by the Palestinian masses, now fully under the sway of Hamas – have flooded Israel with millions of combatants.

After bombarding the Jewish state with tens of thousands of missiles, causing hundreds of thousands of Jews to flee (no easy task after a shell-shocked Ben- Gurion airport is closed), Arab mobs have crossed our borders, overwhelming the courageous but hopelessly outnumbered soldiers of the IDF. The smell of victory finally in their noses, the Arabs reject all international calls for a cease-fire and unleash a brutal assault on the civilian population. The government considers using nuclear weapons, but the enemy is already within the gates, and the Opposition effectively blocks the proposal.

Independent Israel, as we knew it, has ceased to exist.

Three months after Israel: The last pockets of Jewish resistance have been brutally suppressed. Thousands of Jewish fighters, summarily executed for carrying arms, are slaughtered in the public squares. MKs – present and former, including Arab MK’s – having been charged as war criminals and accomplices to genocide, are also killed.

(Pointedly, the first to be shot are members of the Israeli Left, who zealously defended the Palestinian cause .) The haredi population is not spared; they, too, are slaughtered, despite their protests of being apolitical. Only a handful of Neturei Karta are left unharmed – a reward for their strident anti-Zionism through the years.

Six months after Israel: Hundreds of thousands of Israelis, seeking asylum, find they have no place to run. The Arab League has ordained an oil embargo against any country opening its borders to survivors. The EU has declared a moratorium on all immigration, wishing to “carefully study the situation before inflaming any further passions.”

Even those holding American passports are barred from entering the United States if they have resided in a war zone during the past year, in the interest of “national security.”

Meanwhile, those Jewish homes still intact are given to Palestinians, while their former residents are placed in refugee camps, now called “holding centers for foreign workers.” Starvation and sickness are rampant, as the UN finally decides it will no longer be administering the camps.

One year after Israel: Judaism is no longer acknowledged as an official religion in the new Palestine. Jewish practice among the skeleton Jewish population is permitted only in private, and even then is subject to constant harassment.

The last remaining synagogues – branded as “centers of terrorism and racism” - are consecrated as mosques, in line with Islamic law forbidding any non-Islamic places of worship on “holy ground.” While most churches are similarly converted, several of the more famous ones are designated as “museums” and “cultural attractions” so as to continue to attract Christian tourists.

The most dramatic moment comes when the Western Wall is dismantled, stone by stone, as the foundation is laid for the Grand Al-Buraq Mosque.

Western criticism is muted.

10 years after Israel: Diaspora Jewry, devastated by the loss of Israel, is in a state of rapid decline. In-fighting within the shrinking communities pits those whose love for Israel still lingers against those who blame Israel’s founders for having established the state in the first place and bringing such destruction upon the Jews. The American administration, anxious to maintain ties with the ascendant Islamic world, categorizes Zionist organizations as “harmful to American interests,” and forbids their funding and publications. Jewish schools continue to operate, but their curriculum is subject to constant inspection and are carefully monitored for signs of “subversive” activity.

50 years after Israel: As world economies experience a deep decline, democracies declare a state of emergency.

Jews are scape-goated and subjected to increased discrimination.

Pogroms break out in several countries as Jews are accused of parasitism and disloyalty. All Jews aged 18-25 are drafted, with no exemptions or special privileges.

For their own protection, Jews are moved into closed-off sections of major cities, and their contact with the indigenous population is limited. The lack of Jewish influence and the absence of a homeland leave Jews exposed to every form of abuse.

100 years after Israel: Intermarriage among Jews now exceeds 80%. The combination of high costs and low demand results in only a fraction of Jewish children receiving a Jewish education.

In the Middle East, internecine fighting between Arab nations over the past three decades has left the region in shambles. Palestine, with no natural resources and no wealthy donors, has become bankrupt and largely desolate.

The once-flourishing agriculture is but a memory, as fertile fields revert to wilderness.

In secluded places across the world, small groups of Jews gather to discuss the idea of returning to Zion and reestablishing a land of their own, a place where they may again walk proudly with their God. They decide to meet in a special assembly, which they will call “the Herzl Congress.”

Can it happen? I think not and I pray not. But I certainly will not take this great country, or Jerusalem of Gold, for granted.

Admiral Chester Nimitz was attending a concert in WashingtonD.C. He was paged and told there was a phone call for him. When heanswered the phone, it was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He told AdmiralNimitz that he would now be the Commander of the Pacific Fleet.

Admiral Nimitz flew to Hawaii to assume command of thePacific Fleet, landing at Pearl Harbor on Christmas Eve, 1941. There wassuch a spirit of despair, dejection and defeat, you would have thought theJapanese had already won the war. OnChristmas Day, 1941, Adm. Nimitz was given a boat tour of the destructionwrought on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, big sunken battleships and navyvessels cluttering the waters everywhere you looked.

As the tour boat returned to dock, the young helmsman of theboat asked, "Well Admiral, what do you think after seeing all thisdestruction?"

*Mistake number two:* when the Japanese saw all thosebattleships lined in a row, they got so carried away sinking those battleships,they never once bombed our dry docks opposite those ships. If they haddestroyed our dry docks, we would have had to tow everyone of those ships toAmerica to be repaired. As it is now, the ships are in shallow water andcan be raised.. One tug can pull them over to the dry docks, and we can havethem repaired and at sea by the time we could have towed them to America. And Ialready have crews ashore anxious to man those ships.

*Mistake number three:* Every drop of fuel in thePacific theater of war is on top of the ground in storage tanks five miles awayover that hill. One attack plane could have strafed those tanks anddestroyed our fuel supply. That's why I say the Japanese made three ofthe biggest mistakes an attack force could make, or God was taking care ofAmerica.

Admiral Nimitz was able to see a silver lining in asituation and circumstance where everyone else saw only despair and defeatism.President Roosevelt had chosen the right man for the right job. We desperatelyneeded a leader that could see silver linings in the midst of the clouds ofdejection, despair and defeat.

Imagine for a moment that you're sick and you go see a doctor to explain what you are suffering from.
After having listened to you carefully, the doctor says, “All right. I have interpreted your symptoms. Do you know what we are going to do? I will prescribe medication to your neighbor!”
– Thanks a million, doctor. I already feel much better,” do you say.
If you’re like me, you most probably find this hypothetical story completely absurd. And yet, this story is a perfect reflection of what we all do. We imagine that we will feel better, get better, and stay better if someone else changes, if some circumstances of our lives change.
We think: I would be much happier if this or that person changed. I would be much happier if my neighbor changed, my romantic partner changed, my boss changed, my clients changed, my children changed.
We also think: I would be much happier if this or that situation changed. I would be much happier if I had more money in my bank account, if I lost a few pounds, if my business was more successful, if I was better at writing and public speaking, if the weather was warmer and sunnier.
We erroneously believe that we are going to feel better, get better, and stay better only when someone else will have changed, only when a situation will have changed.
But what would really happen if this or that person changed? What would really happen if this or that situation changed? Alas, we would find ourselves to be as vulnerable as before. We are the ones who need to change. In reference to our hypothetical story, we are the ones who need medication.
Remember this: We do not feel good because all is well in our world. All is well in our world because we feel good. The way to change things in our lives is to first change ourselves. That’s what the mystics and the most prominent teachers keep repeating over and over again since the beginning of time.

A“reform” Jew walked up to the Kotel with his young son. I knew that he wasreform from the brand-new tallesim (prayer shawls) that he had in hishand. They were about 12 inches wide. According to halacha (Jewish law),to qualify for tzitzis (Biblical fringes), a garment has to cover themajority of a man’s body, which means that a tallis has to be a lotwider than 12 inches.

I walkedup to them and invited them to put on tefillin. The father said, “No, weare not going to do that.”

I trieda number of things to get him to agree, but he refused them all. Finally,trying to get rid of me, he said, “This morning was my son’s bar mitzvah,so we do not need to put on tefillin.”

I saidto the son, “Oh, mazal tov. How wonderful! Did you put on tefillinthis morning?”

He hadnot. I tried to convince the son, who was a lot softer than his father. Finally,the man asked his son if he wanted to do it. The boy really did not know whatwe were talking about, but maybe, out of curiosity, he nodded softly and said,“Alright.”

I put tefillinon them and explained in a loving way what tefillin are and why we putthem on. I walked them to the Kotel and showed them how to pray for their lovedones. The father wanted them to put on their tallesim. Normally, I wouldhave tried to talk him out of making a blessing on those tiny tallesim,but I could see that it would have really hurt his feelings, so I helped themto put them on.

They hada very good time. I stood behind them, where they could not see me and watchedhow the father taught his son to kiss his tzitzits. It felt very warm tosee.

Thereare so many things that we can learn from this story, but perhaps the mostimportant one is that the father absolutely refused to put on tefillin. It wassomething repulsive in his eyes, and he was teaching this repulsiveness to hisyoung son. But when he was shown how to put them on in a loving way, both heand his son had a wonderful, even spiritual, time. He didn’t want to take themoff!

I am notblaming the father. He was just reflecting what he had been taught about thestrictness of “Jewish law.” But, someone out there is doing something wrong ifa Jewish man and his bar mitzvah boy would never have put on tefillin intheir lives unless that false way of learning Torah was corrected.

Again, Iam asking you. Do you know any other fathers and sons like this? It is such asad waste for these Jews not to have the advantage doing of this mitzvah.Is there any way that you can help them?

Close to 50 million people live in South Korea, and everyone learns Gemara (Talmud) in school. "We tried to understand why the Jews are geniuses, and we came to the conclusion that it is because they study Talmud," said the Korean ambassador to Israel. And this is how "Rav Papa" became a more well known scholar in Korea than in Israel.

It is doubtful if the Amoraic scholars, Abbaye and Rava imagined their discussions of Jewish law in the Beit Midrash in Babylon would be taught hundreds of years later in East Asia. Yet it turns out that the laws of an "egg born on a holiday" ("ביצה שנולדה ביום טוב") is actually very interesting to the South Koreans who have required that Talmud study be part of their compulsory school curriculum.

Almost every home in South Korea now contains a Korean-translated Talmud. But unlike in Israel, the Korean mothers teach the Talmud to their children. In a country of close to 49 million people who believe in Buddhism and Christianity, there are more people who read the Talmud - or at least own their own copy at home - more than in the Jewish state. Much more.

"So we too will become geniuses"

"We were very curious about the high academic achievements of the Jews," explains Israel's ambassador to South Korea, Young Sam Mah, that was a host on the program "culture today."

"Jews have a high percentage of Nobel laureates in all fields: literature, science and economics. This is a remarkable achievement. We tried to understand what is the secret of the Jewish people? How they - more than other people - are able to reach those impressive accomplishments? Why are Jews so intelligent? The conclusion we arrived at is that one of your secrets is that you study the Talmud."

"Jews study the Talmud at a young age, and it helps them, in our opinion, to develop mental capabilities. This understanding led us to teach our children as well. Young says that he himself studied the Talmud at a very young age: "It is considered very significant study," he emphasized. The result is that more Koreans have Talmud sets in their homes than Jews in Israel.

"I, for example, have two sets of the Talmud: the one my wife bought me, and the second was a gift from my mother."

Koreans don't only like the Talmud because they see it as promoting genius, but because they found values that are close to their hearts.

In 109 BCE, the Hasmoneans (led by John Hyrcanus, a nephew of Judah the Maccabee) conquered Samaria, the capital city of the Samarian sect. This conquest was significant because it ended some 800 years of Samarian influence in Israel. The Samarians were a schismatic movement, comprised largely of non-Jews who practiced some Jewish traditions. The conquest may have further polarized the Jews into two distinct parties: 1) the Pharisees ("separated ones") because they sought to retain the separation of Jewish culture from the Greek influences of Hellenization, and 2) the Sadducees, Jews who embraced Greek culture.

Reading this article The Complacency and Complicity of America's Jews By Lauri B. Regan , I realized that's this is not about the religious vs the non-religious.

When the Jews Left Egypt it was only, by best estimates, only 20% of the "Jewish" population. The rest died in Egypt. Throughout the Jewish history the story repeats itself again and again, most of the Jews getting lost.

Whenever I thought about it, shivers would run through my spine, and disbelief would fill my heart and mind. How was this possible ?

Reb Mottle of Chernobyl moved to Israel in the late 1880's. One of his most prized possessions was the succah of his great-grandfather. With every successive generation - the succah seemed to grow in holiness. People from all over Jerusalem would come to sit in the magnificent succah.

1914 proved to be a difficult year. World War I closed the sea-lanes to Israel. Basic commodities were almost impossible to find. Food and fuel were at a premium. That year, people came to visit the Rebbe and found him sitting a plain shack. The beautiful succah was gone! No one could muster the courage to ask Reb Mottle what had happened.

A great festive meal was held the following Chanuka. One of the participants asked to be allowed to speak. "You probably are still wondering what happened to Reb Mottle's wonderful succah. My newborn grandson was seriously ill. The doctors recommended he received warm baths twice a day. The fuel shortage was so dire that bathing him twice a week would prove challenging. I went to Reb Mottle to ask his advice. Without hesitating, the Rebbe said, 'Take the Succa.' As much as I protested, the Rebbe would not hear of it. 'This is a matter of life and death. Of what importance are a few boards in comparison?' With a heavy heart, I took an ax and broke the boards into firewood. I am happy to report that my grandson was pronounced healthy today."

There was once a country doctor that lived in a small village in Poland. He was a very charitable fellow but would let people know it. It once happened, that he was riding in his carriage when he chanced upon the Rabbi of the village walking along the road. He offered the Rav a ride, who gladly accepted.

During the trip, the doctor struck up a conversion. "You know," he said, "I never charge poor people who can't afford my services." The rabbi coolly responded, "Nu, I do the same thing." The man was a little taken aback. OK, so the Rav wasn't impressed, but what does he mean? Perhaps he also doesn't charge poor people for his services.

The doctor continued, "Why yes, if someone is too poor to afford medication, I will supply the necessary apothecaries, free of charge." The Rabbi responded, "Nu, I do that too." The doctor did not understand. What medicines did he prescribe? He concluded that there must be instances where the Rav supplied the needs of the poor.

Still trying to impress his passenger, the doctor boasted, "There are times when I will prescribe a rest trip to a resort. If the poor person cannot afford the trip, I will pay for his trip and the money lost from not working." The Rabbi simply responded, "Nu, I do that too." The doctor could not contain himself. "You mean to tell me that you provide vacations for your congregants?" "Not at all," responded the Rabbi. "What I meant was that I also tell everyone all the good things I do. The bad things, I don't even tell myself."

Years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mum taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger... he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mum would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet.

(I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honour them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home - not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing..

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name???

We just call him "TV." I really fear what his grandkids will be like.

He has a wife now...we call her "Computer."
Their first child is "Cell Phone."
Second child "I Pod."
